This contains reviews of books I have enjoyed (some are out of print--sorry!) and also books/booklist.htm, a larger list of recommended books with thumbnail descriptions of each. The list reflects my own preferences in reading, primarily non-fiction, especially travelogues, biographies and first-hand accounts.

Here is the home page of a folder of poems I have written or translated over the years. Some rhyme, some do not.

This folder will contain various topics in science and math, aimed at high-school level and at interested adults. Initially you will find sections on "Continued fractions," on "A new way of multiplying numbers," and a proposed set of science standards for public schools, produced for Maryland in 1998. By the way (for those who have not yet caught on), "phy6" is pronounced "physics" and has been my car's license plate for many years.

This is a collection of personal journals from various journeys undertaken over the years--some in the framework of the elderhostel program. Feel free to skip parts which describe people or topics whose interest is mainly to the writer: these are personal memories.

This folder contains various topics related to Jewish heritage and culture. Currently it has several parts. The larger one is a collection of sermons and talks given at congregation "Mishkan Torah" in Greenbelt, Maryland, on occasions when the rabbi was absent. I started doing this in 1973, when I led the congregation during a year it could not afford a rabbi, and continued giving talks and leading discussions on occasions after that.
Some thoughts about doing so form one of the essays in the second part, which includes a long review of the bible. Other parts include a play "The Zoning Exception" and some poems.

The Passover holiday is marked in the Jewish home by a festive dinner, the "seder," marked with ancient rituals and the reading of the "Haggadah", a formal retelling in Hebrew (or its translation) of the exodus from Egypt, based on the bible. The standard Haggadah, used for about 2000 years, is here adapted to our day and age as "An American Haggadah." Its pages are provided in PDF format, and other web pages here explain and comment.

One also needs a catch-all folder for web files hard to classify. Currently it holds just one file--"How Ilana Learned to Read," a detailed account of how our children learned to read at ages 2-3. Ilana was the eldest, the trailblazer; she and her husband spent the last 2+ years on a sailboat. Their logbook is on the web at

and as of June 2002, their boat is back in Florida.

published in 1927. They are placed here on the internet in memory of his daughter Dr. Irene Fischer.
